When you have pets, sometimes the last thing you think you can do is take a vacation. Whether your pet is needy or you’re just overprotective, leaving your furry best friend can feel impossible. However, we’re here to tell you it can actually be a fairly painless experience!
Find A Sitter
One of the most important steps to vacationing with pets at home is to find a sitter you trust. There are many ways to go about doing this, whether you’re trusting a family member, friend, or paying someone online.
- Ask someone you know
If you’re trying to save as much money as possible, the best way to vacation while your pets stay home is to ask a family member or friend to pet sit for you. However, make sure you feel comfortable with them watching your pet. If you don’t feel certain that your pets are getting the care they deserve, you won’t be able to enjoy yourself on your trip.
- Hire a sitter
Pet sitters are people you hire that will either come to stay at your house for the duration of your trip, have your animal stay at their house for the duration of your trip, or drop in and feed and/or walk your pet.
There are many ways you can find pet sitters, such as through apps or simply through Google. One useful website to find pet sitters on is Rover, which connects you to a variety of pet sitters in your area that are available on the dates you choose. With Rover, you can go through the list of people and the app will tell you their rates and show you their reviews. Then, you contact them to ask if they’re available. Make sure to set up a meeting to get to know the sitter and to go over your pet’s routines & habits before entrusting your fur baby with them.
However, if you don’t want to go through the hassle of finding a pet sitter on Rover, you can always go through a professional company instead. Whether you have cats, dogs, or another animal just searching “Pet sitter near me” on Google will show you all the pet sitting companies near you and give you reviews to help you get a good feel for the place. You can contact a few of them to see their availability, but make sure they are bonded and insured!
- Use a kennel
A more traditional way of vacationing with a pet at home is using a kennel or a pet hotel. With this method, you will drop off your pet at a facility where they will feed and care for your pet for the duration of your trip.
Whether you go for a traditional kennel or a more upscale pet hotel, your pet will be cared for while you’re gone and you’ll travel comfortably knowing they will be in good hands.
Tools for Success
When leaving your pet at home, there are many other factors to consider other than just the sitter. Depending on what kind of sitter you have, you may want to consider some of the following gadgets to ensure your animal is taken care of at all times.
- Automatic Pet Feeder
If you have a sitter that is just dropping in occasionally or if you simply want to ensure that you have a back-up plan if something happens, an automatic pet feeder is a must. With an automatic pet feeder, you simply put the food into the feeder and set the times for it to feed your pet. With this, you can keep a feeding schedule (if you have one) and not rely on free feeding or the sitter.
There are varying types of automatic pet feeders, some more advanced than others, so finding one that fits your situation is important.

- Water Fountain
When you’re gone on vacation and you leave your pet with a regular water bowl, the pet may drink from it at first, but as the water sits and gets dust particles and older, your pet won’t want to drink from it. Therefore, if you’re trying to avoid using a pet sitter, it may be beneficial to invest in a water fountain.
Water fountains continuously cycle through the water, ensuring that it is never sitting still, making it more enticing for your pet to drink, as well as cleaner.

- Automatic Litter Boxes
For those of us that have cats, you know how picky they can be about their litter boxes. If it’s too dirty, often, they won’t even use the box. Therefore, automatic litter boxes can be a dream come true while you’re on vacation.
With an automatic litter box, you don’t have to stress the hassle of cleaning up after your cats every day while gone. Instead, the box does the work for you, leaving both you and your kitty happy. This also allows you to not have to worry about your cat deciding your couch or carpet would be a better litter box while you’re away on vacation.
If you have both an automatic litter box and automatic pet feeder, this could be an investment that saves you money in the long run as well. Instead of having to pay a sitter to come to stay or visit your home every day, they can come as needed to put more food in the automatic feeder, give them fresh water, and make sure the kitties have some company.

A lot of the time, half of the stress of leaving your pet behind is not being able to see them and know what they’re doing. Cameras can help alleviate some of this stress by allowing you to see your pet while you are gone. You can get one camera and put it in a spot your pet frequently goes or get multiple cameras and put them all around your house.
Personally, we have two cameras that we use to watch our cats while we’re gone and it has relieved a lot of the stress that comes with leaving your pet behind. Most cameras stream directly to an app on your phone, so whenever you fancy, you can check on your pets. There are many other features that these cameras have, such as 2-way audio, noise detection, motion detection, and allowing you to even throw treats.

- Smart Toys
When you’re gone, a lot of the time, your pet will just sleep until you get back. If they get bored enough, unfortunately, they might even get destructive. When you’re on vacation, you want to make sure you have tools to avoid any destruction to your home and belongings. The easiest solution? Smart toys.
Toys that will challenge your fur baby’s brain and ensure they aren’t bored while you are gone is essential if you are leaving them behind while you are on vacation. This is especially true if you don’t have someone staying at your house with them.
